Limited Geisha Events in Kanazawa

Higashi Chaya District

Kanazawa was developed as a castle town where the culture of samurai and townspeople flourished. In this beautiful destination, you can still feel the traditional spirit of Japan. One of the sophisticated cultures of the townspeople can be seen in the three Chaya districts that remain today. “Chaya” refers to a building where geishas entertain guests with music, dance, and refined hospitality. In the fall of 2023, the three Chaya districts in Kanazawa will host exclusive events to experience geisha culture. Only a limited number of people will be able to attend the events and enjoy the exquisite performances up close.

Located across the river from downtown Kanazawa, the Nishi Chaya district has more than 200 years of history. Despite its convenient location, the street is usually quiet, so you may hear the sound of traditional music as the geishas’ practice. This is one of the venues for viewinga a tea ceremony and geisha performances.

The Kazue-mach Chaya district is nestled along an elegant river nicknamed Lady River. As you stroll through the narrow alleys, you will feel like you have stepped back in time. It is an another place for the Geisha and Tea Ceremony.

Higashi is the largest of the three Chaya districts in Kanazawa. Although the chaya district is bustling with people from all over the world every day, tourists actually do not have many opportunities to see geisha performances in real teahouses. The Geisha Evenings was the first event to offer such an opportunity in the Higashi Chaya district.
